What is the Leitner System?
The Leitner System is a spaced repetition method for learning. Cards you know well are reviewed less often; cards you struggle with come up more frequently. This helps you focus on what you need to practice while keeping mastered material fresh.
Main menu
- Learn by continent β Organize cards by region (Africa, Asia, Europe, etc.). Each region is split into smaller groups. Pick a region and box to study.
- Learn randomized β Practice with random cards. Choose how many (10, 25, 50, 100, or all) and which region (random or a specific continent). Does not affect your Leitner progress or trophies.
- Settings β Toggle options like showing the map after answers.
The five boxes
Cards move through five boxes based on your performance:
- Box 1 β Practice
- Box 2 β Daily (review every day)
- Box 3 β Semiweekly
- Box 4 β Weekly
- Box 5 β Biweekly
Answer correctly and the card moves to the next box. Answer incorrectly and it goes back to Box 1. This keeps difficult cards in frequent rotation.
Studying a card
- Read the question (e.g. βWhat is the capital of France?β).
- Type your answer in the input field.
- Click Check to see if youβre right.
- If stuck, use Hint to reveal the first letter(s) of the capital.
- After feedback, click Next (or wait for auto-advance on correct answers) to continue.
If the map is enabled in Settings, it will show the countryβs location after you check your answer.
Tips on learning
Raw facts like βFrance β Parisβ are hard to remember on their own. Create a link between the country and its capital using a common word or a short phrase. For example: Paris sounds like pair β imagine a pair of French baguettes. Or: Lima (Peru) β picture a lime growing in the Peruvian jungle. These small associations make the connection stick.
Learn by continent
On the continent view youβll see cards grouped in columns by box. Click a card to start a study session for that region and box. Use Recommended distribution to split large regions into smaller groups. Edit mode lets you merge or split regions to customize how cards are organized.
Learn randomized
Use the randomized mode for extra practice without affecting your Leitner boxes or trophies. Click 10 random countries for a quick session, or use the query builder to choose the number of questions (10, 25, 50, 100, or all) and the region (random across all continents, or a specific continent like Europe or Africa). Your answers in random mode are never saved.
Milestones
Earn trophies as you progress: first correct answer, 10/50/100/1000 correct, first card in Box 5, one card from each region in Box 5, 25 countries in Box 5, mastering a continent, and becoming a World Explorer. Track your achievements on the main screen.
